Brain Tutor HD for iOS

Brain Tutor HD invites you to learn about the structure and function of the human brain directly on your iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch. Brain Tutor HD teaches you knowledge about the human brain through interactive exploration of rotatable 3D models and visualizations on high-resolution brain slices. The data used in Brain Tutor HD has been analyzed and prepared with our flagship software BrainVoyager QX based on anatomical and functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans. Besides having fun with rotatable 3D models, the program teaches information about major brain labeling schemes (atlases), including major lobes, gyri, sulci, subcortical structures as well as Brodmann and functional areas. Getting Started

Download Brain Tutor HD from the App Store. Since version 2.0, the program is a universal app, i.e. the same program can be downloaded from your iPad or iPhone/iPod Touch. After installation, tap the "Brain Tutor" app icon to start the program. Slide your finger over the brain and head models to rotate, translate and slice the models. Pinch to zoom in or out. Tap on any brain region in a 3D model to highlight it and to learn about its name. Alternatively you may select any brain region you want to learn about in the navigation table for the currently selected brain atlas. Switch to a different brain atlas (lobes, gyri, sulci, Brodmann, subcortical and functional areas). Tap the arrow (blue disclosure icon) on the right side of a brain region name (iPad) or tap the text icon (iPhone/iPod Touch) to obtain important information about the selected brain structure.

Background Information

The brain models are obtained from anatomical and functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans of a female participant. The anatomical brain data was acquired with a resolution of 1mm x 1mm x 1mm. The 3D head and brain models were obtained from this data using sophisticated segmentation and cortex reconstruction tools of the BrtainVoyager QX software. The hemisphere cortex meshes are reconstructed close to the white matter / grey matter boundary (as opposed to the pial surface) in order to allow looking inside sulci. The lobes, gyri, sulci, subcortical structures and Brodmann areas were labelled by expert cognitive neuroscientists. The labelings and provided text information was obtained by combining information from standard text books and atlases. Note that locations of Brodmann areas are only approximations.

The functional MRI scans were obtained from the same participant so that the depicted locations of functional areas are correct (for the displayed brain). More areas are scheduled to be included in future updates as well as inclusion of a probabilistic functional atlas; note that any income from selling Brain Tutor HD is used to finance anatomical and functional imaging scans used to build the probabilistic functional atlas, see also: Frost, M & Goebel, R.
